Pavement

When it comes to pavement options, using a porous material is one of the most sustainable choices.  Porous pavement is permeable, meaning water can infiltrate through the surface thus reducing water runoff.  Typically a reservoir is installed below the pavement which stores the water and allows for it to slowly infiltrate the water below.  Porous pavements can be used as a driveway or patio material, are very durable and help the environment by reducing water runoff.  A second, more unconventional but greener option in paving systems for driveways is to use vegetation.  Using vegetation removes the "heat island" affect created when paved surfaces absorb heat.  Green driveways also absorb most rain water, creating very little runoff.  A structural lattice is required underneath the vegetative surface to prevent ruts and other damage from cars.  For more information on creating a green driveway, check out HGTV's article: A Driveway That Looks Like A Yard.
