The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association developed the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) to encourage practices that benefit the environment and society. The voluntary program gives cabinet manufacturers a way to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and helps you identify products that are better for your home, your family and the environment. The ESP seal is displayed on certified products and verifies that the manufacturer has met compliance in five categories: air quality, product resource management, process resource management, environmental stewardship and community relations.
ESP:
rewards manufacturers for low formaldehyde-emitting wood products
promotes use of wood from a recognized sustainable forestry program
requires companies to annually review their practices to safeguard the environment, track their achievements and continually seek new methods and practices.
is the only environmental certification program that specifically focuses on kitchen and bath cabinet
Purchasing cabinets made with sustainable woods is another way to make your kitchen eco-friendly. Bamboo, for instance, is one of the world's fastest-growing plants, taking just three to six years to grow large enough to harvest. Bamboo doesn't require pesticides, which means less chemical pollution and cleaner air. Eucalyptus is another good option. Look for cabinets made from solid wood or alternative materials such as wheatboard, and finished with nontoxic finishes, low formaldehyde-emitting wood products.
